Big Mama blogging at you for the first time with some cool happenings from Dogfish!

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than with a recycling project! Dogfish co-workers recently had the opportunity during the first three weeks of May, to showcase their creative talents by recycling honey buckets which once contained ingredients for several of our ales. The challenge was presented and seven brave individuals chose to participate. Their mission was to recycle a white five gallon bucket into whatever functioning item they dreamed up. Alison S., DFH Brewings & Eats Brewer of Vodka, Gin and three types of Rum entered her stellar version of a beer chiller complete with L.E.D. lighting.

I redesigned my bucket to become a pink planter for hens, chicks and pink grass.

John K., part of our magnificent Maintenance crew will never be without clean clothes since he created a hose-less, electric-less, washing machine complete with lid and plunger for agitation. Albeit a tad on the small side, it sure will come in handy should the power go out!

Nick B., our crafty C.Uh.Oh., demonstrated what a man of vision he truly is when he flipped a bucket over and viola- he had a make-shift guest chair for his cubicle.

Mark C., our dynamite Donations Dude revamped his bucket into a his own version of the Topsy Turvy tomato planter.

Greg C., Engineer extraordinaire, that we credit with overseeing all of our brite tank installations graciously requested two buckets! Drilling precise holes in one bucket for minnows, he left the other bucket intact to catch water as he pulled his minnow bucket up! Genius I tell you, simply genius!

Frank P., King of Wastewater and other slightly off-centered smelling jobs had entered the contest on a more practical level, recycling his bucket(s) into portable restroom (notice, I did not say private) and a simple fish bucket. We are still not sure if Frank used more than one bucket or had one bucket with dual uses.

After the general population of co-workers voted, Alison S. took first place, I took second and John K., took third. Accordingly, we were each awarded a beautiful bamboo plant in a DFH growler, a pint bottle and a beer bottle.

Individually, the entries were well thought out and beautifully constructed. Collectively, if the seven folks who participated in the competition are ever marooned on an island together, well certainly be able to catch and store fish, eat, eliminate waste, admire the foliage, wash clothes and chill our beer! Nirvana from honey buckets, who would have guessed?
