Mellowdious Gin returns this Friday
Our delightfully off-centered, barrel-aged Mellowdious Gin makes its second return on August 25th to our Milton and Rehoboth Dogfish landmarks! While barrel-aging might not be the first thing that comes to mind when you think about Gin, you’ll have to trust us that the nuances of complex flavors and aromas is worth the wait.
Mellowdious Gin was one of those happy accidents, sort of like the chocolate dropping into the peanut butter. “One day in 2015 when we were tasting early recipes of Compelling and Whole Leaf gins, we poured the two together and discovered the very citrus forward Compelling Gin’s profile complemented Whole Leaf 's floral-hop build,” says Dogfish Head founder and CEO Sam Calagione. “The end result was sort of super-gin”
When developing our Compelling Gin and Whole Leaf Gin, we purposely wanted two very different flavor profiles. With Compelling Gin, you’ll find bright citrus and culinary flavors of juniper berries, orange peel, lemon and lime peel, cinnamon, green cardamom, coriander seed and kaffir lime leaves. Whereas with Whole Leaf Gin, you’ll notice rich earthy flavors of juniper berries, whole leaf cascade hops, chamomile flowers, angelica root, orris root, lemon peel, black cardamom, cubeb berries and coriander.
"I’d say each gin stands up on its own with some big flavor, a result of the from-scratch production process where we use all real juniper, botanicals and spices redistilled and our Analog Vodka distillate. As a result I felt like this new gin needed some time to mellow, in the case of this batch for 10 months in used bourbon barrels” says Head Distiller Graham Hamblett. “ I purposely chose a used bourbon barrel because anything new would have resulted in an ‘over-oaking’ of this delicate spirit. With time, the melody of botanical flavors marry and meld together, and the used bourbon barrel adds a subtle vanilla-y sweetness to the finish."
Pale straw in color with aromas of bright citrus and floral herbs accented by pepper and cinnamon, Mellowdious Gin has a seemingly endless evolution of flavors from brisk juniper to orange creamsicle, complemented by a lively mouthfeel with a zealous yet subdued intensity.
